Fashion Documentary: The Tents

Thursday 8 September 2011

This month will mark the official release of a new fashion documentary, for which I can hardly wait for! The Tents directed by James Belzer is a must-see for any fashionista and it includes commentaries and anecdotes from key New York style influencers and designers, such as Suzy Menkes, Nina Garcia, Carolina Herrera, Tommy Hilfiger, Betsey Johnson, Dona Karan and many more.

The 72-minutes long documentary chronicles the evolution of New York Fashion Week from its beginnings in the 1940s as Press Week, through the golden, but dangerous era of the tents in Bryant Park (known today more as Fashion Park) and up to today's Mercedes Benz Fashion Week organized at the Lincoln Center. The documentary will be a delight for anyone interested in fashion as it goes beyond the notoriously hard-to-access backstage life of the fashion show to show an honest portrayal of the first organized fashion week, including its the dark side.

When asked why he decided to tackle the evolution of such a huge event as New York Fashion Week, director James Belzer simply said that "there is clearly a bourgeoning interest in behind-the-scene stories about the fashion industry" after other fashion documentaries started appearing. He's so right! Behind-the-scenes videos or photos are so interesting to watch, sometimes I feel that they're even better than the actual show!

I leave you with some stills from the video and right afterwards you can watch the trailer!

The director's vision was "to create a film that would satisfy the fashion industry by telling a credible story and to make a film that someone from outside the fashion industry could relate to. I wanted to invite tha audience into this world and for them to know how it really works."

"With a diverse range of voices, we take the audience on an exciting journey through New York fashion history. The term "The Tents" now resonates as a metaphor for the fashion show venue itself as well as the overall fashion week experience."
