After the scandal regarding John Galliano's remarks and subsequent firing, the atmosphere at the Dior show last Friday was a little bit tense and somber. Far from the usual scene at a Dior fashion show only few celebrities attended and they were mostly related to the brand and the atmosphere was rather professional than glamorous. Sidney Toledano, Dior's chief executive came out on the runway before the start of the show and gave the first public statement on the matter that kept the whole fashion world on the edge for the past week. He wanted to keep people's mind on the legacy of the house and the hard work of everybody involved in creating and designing the garments despite last week's happenings. In this spirit, after the last passage of the models on the runway the lights were dimmed for a moment, a time during which John Galliano usually took his bows, and afterwards the craftsmen from the Dior ateliers all came on the runway standing together, showing the unity of the group in such difficult circumstances. The audience stood up to salute this beautiful gesture.
The show was amazing - great vivid colors, rich materials, furs and hats, luxurious shapes and coats, platform boots in striking colors and gowns that seemed inspired by lingerie pieces. Everything was so great that I had a hard time figuring out what to show you so I decided to split the Dior show in two parts: this one about the more down-to-earth garments in solid shapes and tomorrow morning the light and ethereal gowns.
