Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week AW 2011/12: Valentino

Friday, 8 July 2011

On Wednesday the Hotel Salomon de Rothschild in Paris hosted the splendid Valentino Haute Couture show. The collection was true to the name consisting in the same delicate embroideries and flowy figure-hugging shapes as in the previous seasons. The whole concept was built on a feeling of understated elegance, with round necklines and long sleeves. The collection blended subtly daywear and evening gowns with a gorgeous elegant color palette consisting of beige and black with touches of red, gold and pistachio.

The show was praised as being the best collection of the house since the new designers, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Picciori, took over. Some comments said the garments were very "Kate Middleton", perfect for a modern-day princess, which is also the direction in which it seems the designers themselves wanted to go. The gorgeous lace dress worn by Freja Beha Erichsen in the picture above was called by them "The Little Princess". In a period when the Kate Middleton rage is still very much in everybody's attention, this collection drew the best inspiration and knew how to appeal to the public.

Among my favorite pieces are the princess dress I already mentioned, the knee-length beaded dresses, the dark blue gown, the suit and the gown worn by Ruby Aldridge and of course the stunningly simple velvet pistachio gown. I also really liked the styling, always very fresh and youthful. The golden flowers in the hair were the perfect accessory complimenting the garments.

Here are the runway looks. Which one is your favorite?

Love the dresses, how gorgeous! And love that Freja is the first girl to walk! Maybe I haven't been keeping up with things well, but I haven't seen her in a while and now she is popping up everywhere!

Re: Yeah, I haven´t checked out all the couture collections yet but I do think the Givenchy one will be the one I favour most anyways. I´m just in love with everything (not everything but a lot) of what Tisci does.

It seems to be a lot of gold going on in the couture collections (as usual, but this time it´s even more).

I agree with you, Caroline, the Givenchy collection is in my top two! Riccardo Tisci's garments were definitely one of the most hard worked collection out there, not only because of the details, but also because of all the work to make it seem effortless and barely there.

More gold could be bad, but for Valentino it works like a charm!
