Travel Series: Paris (II)

Saturday 8 September 2012

Hey guys, I'm back with the second part of my Parisian itinerary! I saw you enjoyed the detailed overview of the visit and the photo overload, so I took it as a hint to continue this way haha! For the second day we chose a more relaxing day (as if you could do something like that in Paris!) and we started with Place de la Bastille, the legendary hub of the French Revolution. The prison nowadays is gone, but the tower in the centre of the square stands there to remind us of that gruesome period. Right next to Place de la Bastille, hidden behind the large boulevards and a few narrow streets, lies one of those little gems that you discover by chance: a small square called Place des Vosges. It's the green heart of the neighborhood and it's surrounded by similar brick stone houses on all four sides. One of these houses was actually where the famous French novelist Victor Hugo spent a few years living and writing.

From here, I decided to open my trusted guide and look for a particular spot on Ile St. Louis that I wanted to visit, hence the confused tourist look!

I finally gave up looking through the guide and decided that by simply looking at the streets and houses and not panicking with the book in my hands I had much more to win! We walked on the borders of the Seine up to the romantic Ile St. Louis and then up to Ile de la Cite and the Notre Dame cathedral once again. Bogdan didn't stop until he got some gargoils in his pics from the tower of the cathedral.

From here we moved on towards the modern Georges Pompidou Centre and the Atelier Brancusi, passing through the Marche aux Fleurs, next to the Seine. The Marche is a really cute place, perfect to buy stuff for your house or garden, we bought a few presents from here.

As I've told you before, we had planned a quiet picnic for the afternoon in Bois de Vincennes, next to the Castle of Vincennes. Well, our plans were a bit shaken by the fact that the nice park is not exactly next to the castle and we had to walk for about 45 minutes to get there, but in the end we managed to have our quiet picnic next to the duck in the lake! So beware: if you want to visit the Vincennes castle, get down at the Chateau de Vincennes subway station, if you want to go to the park and have a nice break on the grass, get down a couple of stops before Chateau de Vincennes, at Berault or St. Mande!

We called it a night at a cute little French cabaret in Montmartre, called Au Lapin Agile. If you know a little bit of French and you enjoy old French songs and the atmosphere of the bohemian Montmartre filled with artists and painters, you should definitely try to go there, it's a lot of fun!

What was your favorite part of my Paris itinerary so far? Where would you go first?

Where I have been in Paris twice and I have to say that is not my city, I think is a bit overvaluated and I prefer Rome, Nyc or London but I will have to give her a third chance maybe, the only think i really loved about Paris was Montmatre.
Anyway I have to say that you are worth it as a tourist guide I have enjoyed a lot your post and I would give the city a third chance after those 2 post.

I can't really pick a favorite but I always love the views looking out over Paris. I also love the architecture...never thought I would but it's those things and the little cobblestoned-lined alleyways, people watching and the quaint little shops that I love. We just have new crap over here so I do love the old...and the ambience. And I think your tour guide outfit is so cute--love those shoes!
